FibroScan is a non-invasive medical test used to assess the stiffness (or elasticity) of the liver, which helps diagnose liver fibrosis (scarring) and cirrhosis.
It works by using a technology called transient elastography, a type of ultrasound-based method that measures liver stiffness as an indicator of liver damage.
Non-invasive: FibroScan is an alternative to liver biopsy, which requires tissue samples and involves more risk and discomfort.
Quick and pain-free: It is much faster and generally painless compared to invasive diagnostic procedures.
No need for sedation or recovery time.
Repeatable: It can be used to track changes in liver stiffness over time, helping monitor disease progression or response to treatment.
Useful for chronic liver diseases like hepatitis, fatty liver disease (NAFLD/NASH), and liver cirrhosis.
Normal Liver: If the liver stiffness is low, it indicates a normal or healthy liver with little to no fibrosis.
Mild to Moderate Fibrosis: Intermediate levels of stiffness suggest mild or moderate fibrosis.
Severe Fibrosis or Cirrhosis: Higher levels of stiffness are indicative of significant liver damage, potentially cirrhosis.
The results are typically categorized into stages, ranging from F0 (no fibrosis) to F4 (cirrhosis).
Obesity and Other Factors: In obese patients, the test might be less accurate due to excess fat in the abdominal area. It can also be affected by conditions like ascites (fluid in the abdomen) or liver congestion.
Not Diagnostic of Other Liver Conditions: While it’s useful for fibrosis, it does not directly diagnose the underlying cause of liver disease or other conditions like liver cancer.
