Crohn's Disease

Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes inflammation of the digestive tract.

It can affect any part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract from the mouth to the anus, but it most commonly affects the small intestine and the beginning of the large intestine.

The inflammation can extend deep into the layers of the bowel tissue, leading to complications.

Causes:-

The exact cause of Crohn’s disease is unknown, but it is believed to result from a combination of factors, including:

  • Immune System Dysfunction – An abnormal immune response may attack the digestive tract, leading to inflammation.
  • Genetics – A family history of Crohn’s disease increases the risk of developing it.
  • Environmental Factors – Certain factors like diet, smoking, and infections may trigger or worsen the disease.
  • Gut Microbiome – Imbalances in gut bacteria might contribute to inflammation.
  • Lifestyle Factors – Stress and high-fat diets may exacerbate symptoms, though they are not direct causes.

Symptoms :-

  • Digestive Symptoms:

    • Persistent diarrhea
    • Abdominal pain and cramping
    • Blood in stool (sometimes)
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Loss of appetite
  • General Symptoms:

    • Fatigue
    • Fever
    • Weight loss
    • Anemia (due to blood loss or malabsorption)
  • Complications-Related Symptoms:

    • Bowel obstruction (blockage in intestines)
    • Fistulas (abnormal connections between intestines and other organs)
    • Abscesses (pus-filled infections)
    • Malnutrition due to poor nutrient absorption

Complications

  • If left untreated, Crohn’s disease can lead to serious complications, including:

    • Intestinal strictures (narrowing due to scarring)
    • Fistulas and abscesses
    • Malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies
    • Increased risk of colon cancer
    • Joint, skin, and eye inflammation due to immune response
